YMCA
Established in 2001, the 18+ acre YMCA at MP 11 on the Bypass (US 158) has already undergone major expansion. This spectacular facility was conceived as a place for local residents use year round RAIN or SHINE (Outdoor facilities closed during thunderstorms). Once opened, it became apparent that the peak usage by locals was in the off-season when our seasonal visitors had left. A YMCA amenities program was then designed to serve a select number of quality vacation homes that were willing to provide this luxury to their renters. The Canine Cabana is one of only 300 rental homes in the Outerbanks YMCA Amenities Program that allows EVERYONE staying at this property (up to 20 people) FULL access to the Outerbanks YMCA for the duration of your Canine Cabana rental. Your Teens 13 and older may use any of the Outerbanks YMCA facilities without a parent/guardian on site. Children 9-12 may use the facility if accompanied by a parent/guardian. Children 8 and younger MUST be constantly supervised by a parent/guardian (Except when signed into Childwatch). The Outerbanks YMCA works hard to make this as completely handicapped accessible as possible. Both indoor and outdoor pools have a gentle ramp and offer an immersible wheelchair. The indoor facility is all on one level with wide corridors and barrier-free design.
The expansive indoor Fitness Center offers 56 pieces of state-of-the-art cardio and weight equipment including treadmills, ellipticals, stairclimbers, stationary bicycles, and weight machines. The Outerbanks YMCA also offers Pilates, Yoga, Tae Box, Group cycling, gymnastics, dance, cheerleading and many more group exercise classes.
The Outdoor Water Park consists of two pools. There is a free form family pool with spray toys and water features, and a deep pool complete with diving well, 1meter diving board, and a 20ft. water slide. The complex also includes concessions, bathhouse with showers, and lockers. A gentle ramp and immersible wheelchair makes the outdoor pools accessible to everyone. There is a separate picnic pavilion by the Outdoor pool/Waterpark.
The huge indoor lap pool can accommodate Y-aquatics classes AND remain open for swimming for nearly 100 hours/week YEAR ROUND. A gentle ramp and immersible wheelchair makes the indoor pool universally accessible. Y-aquatics include water walking (increase mobility and decrease pain), aqua blast (high energy conditioning class), aqua shape (light aerobics with water resistance training and stretching), aqua fit (fast paced, low impact workout to improve cardiovascular fitness and strength), swim lessons, and scuba classes are offered at the Outerbanks YMCA. The Indoor Pool complex includes a sauna, spa, changing room, lockers and showers.
The popular full court gymnasium hosts organized basketball and volleyball games as well as more spontaneous activities including pick up basketball. You can also sign up to use either of the two YMCA Racquetball Courts. Personal trainers are available on-site.
The 15,000 sq. ft. skate park is the result of the great partnership between the YMCA and the Town of Nags Head. It is an incredibly popular attraction that includes a cement bowl section and a street section with various elements for skaters of all abilities. The skate park is open for skateboards, rollerblades, scooters, and bikes (times may vary on access). FREE beginner skate lessons are offered from 9am - 11am, on the 2nd and 4th Saturday of every month. All children under 18 years of age must have a signed parent/guardian consent form to use the Outerbanks YMCA outdoor Skate Park. All Skate Park guests are required to wear ALL safety equipment. (There are local businesses that rent skateboard equipment nearby.)
The Outerbanks YMCA has two babysitting programs. They provide a complimentary ChildWatch program where parents may leave their small children WHILE working out in the YMCA building. This service is provided Monday-Saturday from 8 AM to 12:30 PM and Monday-Friday 4-8 PM. The Outerbanks YMCA also provides free drop off EVENING organized childcare twice a week from 5-10 PM during the summer (for your 6 month to 12 year old children). Less frequent Parents Night Out babysitting is offered in the off-season. Please call the YMCA @ (252) 449-8897 for details & registration.
Other innovative Outerbanks YMCA programs include senior strength training, FAMILY FUN NIGHTS from 5-7 PM. Activities include water basketball, diving for rings, water volleyball, and snacks. During the summer season the Outerbanks YMCA offers FAMILY EVENTS around the outdoor pool such as Ice Cream Sundays, Tie Dye Tuesdays, Craft Hour Wednessdays, Friday Night Family Cook Outs, etc. There is a Teen Room with Table Games and computer/internet access.
